Jan. 10 — Jared Kushner, US President-elect Donald Trump’s son-in-law,
met with Anbang Insurance Group Co. Chairman Wu Xiaohui in mid-November
for talks about jointly redeveloping a New York property, The New York
Times reported.
The meeting was “a mutually auspicious moment,” the NYT said in a
Jan. 7 report. “Mr. Wu and Mr. Kushner — who is married to Mr. Trump’s
daughter Ivanka and is one of his closest advisers — were nearing
agreement on a joint venture in Manhattan: the redevelopment of 666
Fifth Avenue, the fading crown jewel of the Kushner family real-estate
empire.”
Kushner, 36, is one of the most influential figures in Trump’s orbit.
He is involved in policy and personnel selection and serves as a
middleman between foreign leaders, the White House and the
president-elect. Some media believe China may be concerned about the
country’s firms doing business with Trump family members because they
could become embroiled in complex conflicts of interest, given the close
relationship between Kushner and Trump.
China’s foreign ministry said it was not aware of the talks. Speaking
at a press conference yesterday, spokesman Lu Kang said the ministry is
unable to comment on every business deal. He added that after nearly 40
years of development, China and the US have maintained very close
economic and trade ties and made a lot of business deals.
